Rs. 1 lakh cash reward for bringing rains by performing Homa

An open challenge:

Rs. 1 lakh cash reward for bringing rains by performing Homa

To whom it may concern,

Prajavani, a leading Kannada daily, had recently carried a report written by its staff reporter G.B. Nagaraj on how some of the models put on display at Science Exhibition in Mysuru jointly organised by Karnataka Rajya Vijnana Parishat (KRVP) and a couple of government departments were encouraging superstitious beliefs among schoolchildren. A note posted by Mamata Arasikere, one of my friends, on her Facebook wall in reference to the report triggered intense debate with contending views pouring in. Though I am not a direct science student, I am aware of science to some extent by reading great people who had done valuable work in the field of science.

To comment on one of the topics being intensively debated here, I have, within the limits of my knowledge, understood that Homa or any religious rituals could never bring rains. I am worried to see that many friends who participated in the debate here, especially one who claimed be a “scientist” arguing that religious rituals such as Homa could bring rains. I am distressed to witness how KRVP that was established by great rationalists such as Dr. H. Narasimhaiah has deviated from its path to defeat the very purpose of its establishment – fighting superstition and inculcating scientific temper among people as enshrined in our Constitution. (I don’t think that the statement by a concerned person to dismiss any relation between the exhibition and KRVP was a responsible remark.) I am anxious to imagine the future of science in India after seeing these developments. I am very much concerned to see how these superstitious people are spoiling children’s future by weaning away from science and inculcating blind belief in them. My worries and anxieties might be false and baseless. If they are proved to be false and baseless, I am ready to accept the truth.

In view of these developments, I am throwing an open challenge to all those who argue that rituals such as Homa lead to rainfall: Subject to the terms and conditions listed hereunder, I offer Rs. 1,00,000 (One Lakh Rupees) cash reward to anybody who brings rains by performing Homa. Anybody who seriously thinks that Homa could cause rainfall can take up the challenge and prove their words to win the cash reward.

The terms and conditions of the challenge are as follows.

1.The challenge is valid from the date of its announcement by me till May 31, 2020 or I get first successful contender or my death, whichever is earlier.

2.Those who take up the challenge have to prove their words in three different programmes that I arrange in three different times and locations in Karnataka. The contender will be declared victorious only after rains are witnessed in all the three times and locations within the stipulated time after the performances of Homas as specified in condition number 3. (There is a possibility of accidental raining on the same day and same location of Homa, not necessarily due to Homa but rather to many other reasons. The purpose of this condition is avoiding any confusion that might possibly arise out of such coincidence.

3.The contender has to summon rains to the place of Homa and ensure that the location of Homa witnesses raining within five hours after the Homa. (For, example, it is not acceptable if there is raining in Kashmir within the stipulated time after performing Homa in Bengaluru. Likewise, evasive answers such as “we have finished Homa today and see raining after three months” would not be accepted. If the contender feels that five-hour period is insufficient, he/she has to obtain approval for additional time from before taking up the challenge.)

4.Fixing of date for performances would not be a big issue as mutually convenient dates could be finalised between the contender and challenger.

5.All requirements for Homa – material and facilities – would be provided by me after consulting with the contender. The cost for meeting all requirements and arrangements would be borne by me. The only task that contender has to do is coming to the place of performance on his/her own expenditure and performing Homa to bring rains. If a contender is successful in all the three performances by bringing rains to the Homa location within stipulated time in all the three attempts, he/she would be honoured with Rs.1,00,000 (One Lakh Rupees) cash prize on the spot and I accept that Homa ritual would lead to rainfall. The contender need not pay any penalty for failing in the challenge. However, he/she has to reimburse all the expenditure incurred on the Homa performed as per his/her directions on the spot and issue a public statement accepting the fact that Homa cannot bring rains.

6.If a contender fails to prove his/her words in the first attempt, the question of organising remaining two events for second and third attempts would not arise and hence they would not be conducted.
7.First-come-first-served” principle will be followed to select contenders if the number of aspiring contenders is more.

8.Contender has to deposit Rs. 1,000 (One Thousand Rupees) at the time of registration. (The purpose of this condition is avoiding such people who are not serious about the challenge and who come forward to take up challenge only for publicity sake, spoiling the time and energy of mine and that of those genuine contenders who want to seriously take up the challenge. The deposit money would be returned to the successful contender along with the prize money. The deposit of the loser would be forfeited.

9.Interested can enroll by sending their nominations to my address given below through Registered Post. The nomination should have a complete name, address, email ID, mobile number of the contender along with carrying a Demand Draft of Rs. 1,000 (One Thousand Rupees) drawn from any nationalised bank in favour of `Rajendra Buradikatti' payable at `Shivamogga'. Remember: the aspiring contender needs to first send a photocopy of his application and Demand Draft to my email ID before posting it. I will then discuss the further tasks with the applicant to proceed further.

10.No unnecessary exchange of letters or emails is allowed since the open challenge and its terms and conditions themselves are explicit and clear. No unnecessary letter or mail is entertained. If anybody has still doubts or needs any clarification, he/she can write the same and email me either in Kannada or in English. I will answer if I find it genuine.
